Scope
This standard specifies the content and the form (definition of symbols, abbreviated terms, …) relating to the identification of the floor coverings and underlays, including both, pre-attached and non-pre-attached underlays, necessary to the implementation of a circular economy. The main intended use of this standard is to provide a passport that allows different stakeholders to use this information in their assessment of floor coverings and underlays with regard to circular economy.
Packaging is not in the scope of this document.
Purpose
This document is relevant in the context of the European green deal, in more detail the sustainable products initiative. Under this initiative the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is being developed. One of the requirements under this new regulation will be for all products to have a digital passport (see also COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS On making sustainable products the norm, COM/2022/140 final).
The proposed EN standard aims to provide the European resilient, textile, laminate and modular mechanical locked floor covering industry with the standard product information needed to facilitate circular economy. It will facilitate the National authorities to verify their specific requirements for floor covering products and provide stakeholders with information on the components and structure of the products as well as how to deal with the product at the end of its use i.e. disposing, recycling or reusing.
