This document specifies radiation safety requirements for GUV luminaires used for whole room GUV disinfection in both occupiable and unoccupied spaces.
This document also specifies safety requirements regarding radiation induced ozone.
This document does not apply for:
– devices in which UV-C radiation is contained during operation, like air cleaners
– requirements for performance and functional characteristics
– requirements for preventing material degradation and material damage
UV irradiation is a proven methodology for inactivating microorganisms and viruses in water, in air and on solid surfaces.
GUV luminaires, that intentionally emit UV radiation into occupied and unoccupied spaces, are considered safe if they meet the electrical, thermal, mechanical, human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and photobiological safety requirements provided in international safety standards. However, for GUV luminaires no specific product standards exist yet. IEC/TC 34 has recognized th is standardization gap and has started working on the development of required product standards to close this gap. This work has been allocated to the new TC 34 working 34/WG 23 “UV radiation for germicidal purposes”. Pending the development and publication of comprehensive product safety standards, IEC/TC 34 published IEC PAS 63313:2021 as an intermediate document to help manufacturers introducing safe GUV luminaires.
One of the standardization gaps identified for GUV luminaires concerns specific safety m easures related to human exposure to UV radiation and radiation induced ozone. This proposed new project will deliver a document addressing radiation safety requirements applicable for a range of GUV luminaires incorporating UV sources. Future GUV luminaire product standards can reference this document for these specific requirements.
Therefore, 34/WG 23 recommends TC 34 Secretariat to start this project.
