ISO/IEC PWI TS 20000-16 Information Technology — Service Management — Part 16: Guidance for a sustainable service management system based on ISO/IEC 20000-1

Scope

As a technical specification, this document provides guidance for sustainable service delivery based on the requirements specified in ISO/IEC 20000-1. It is aimed at:

a) organizations that are intending to implement the requirements of ISO/IEC 20000-1 and want to directly address sustainability;

b) organizations that intend to leverage their SMS to enable sustainability actions and sustainable delivery;

c) consultants, trainers and other experts supporting organizations that utilize ISO/IEC 20000-1 to be informed on how to include sustainability actions in an SMS.

Purpose

ISO/IEC TS 20000-16 (also known as P16) provides guidance for organizations who wish to either

• create a sustainable service management system based on ISO/IEC 20000-1

• to improve an existing SMS to support sustainable service delivery.

As part of the ISO initiative (the London Declaration, https://www.iso. org/ClimateAction/LondonDeclaration.html), standards writers are being asked to include requirements or guidance to achieve a global Net Zero emission status by 2050. ISO/IEC 20000-1 is a perfect example where sustainability can be built into the existing structure (beyond the proposed 2023 changes to Annex SL to support climate change). Services are technologically-based, therefore, there is opportunity to design and deliver services with sustainability in mind.

Several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point to areas within technology that can be changed to reduce climate impact. These SDGs include: 06 (Clean water and sanitation), 07 (Affordable and clean energy), 09 (industry, innovation, and infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns), among others.

While organizations can certainly “go it alone and work toward sustainable service delivery,” it is the intent to support service providers, users of ISO/IEC 20000-1, and others, with a document that will point directly to guidance that will have an immediate impact on the environment and minimal impact on existing SMSs/.
