ISO/PWI 17669.2 Determination of the microstructure of isoprene rubber (IR) — 1H-NMR method

Scope

This document specifies a method for the quantitative determination of the microstructure of synthetic isoprene rubber (IR) using 1H-NMR spectrometry. The relative content of three components in IR, cis1, 4-, trans1,4-, and 3,4-polyisoprene can be calculated respectively. This method is applicable for raw synthetic isoprene rubber.

Purpose

Synthetic isoprene rubber(IR) is an elastomer polymerized by 2-methyl-1,3 butadiene with catalyst. It is widely used in tires and other rubber products. Different microstructure (trans-1,4, cis-1,4 and 3,4) can be obtained by different catalytic system and synthesis process. Microstructure of IR affects the properties of the materials, for example, the higher the cis-1,4 structure content, the better the strain induced crystallization, and the higher the tensile strength and tear resistance. Therefore, the identification of microstructure is very useful for IR. Both manufacturers and consumershave an urgent need to establish a uniform method. The purp
