This document is also applicable to protective helmets used in activities with similar hazards, but does not apply to protective helmets used specifically by alpine skiers and snowboarders.
Ski mountaineering is comparable with mountaineering during the mountain ascent and comparable to alpine skiing during the mountain descent. Therefore, currently in order to prevent the head injury risks, ski mountaineers are using helmets complying with two sets of requirements; all requirements in EN 12492 “helmets for mountaineers” and all requirements in EN 1077 “Helmets for alpine skiers and snowboarders”. This leads to bad helmet ventilation during ascent and discomfort for the user.
This new document is intended to provide ski mountaineers with a helmet complying with relevant requirements in terms of ventilation in order to increase the comfort and the safety for the user, while still meeting all essential health and safety requirements for the intended activity.
