The current standard contains the requirement “The maximum flow rate shall be 18,3 ml/s ± 1,8 ml/s”. The wording maximum flow rate is problematic because it describes the situation under the estimation of an ideal rectangular shaped puff profile as shown in Figure 1. In this case the maximum flow rate is equal to the average flow rate once the puff plateu is reached.
In reality, caused by mechanical suction, the puff profile is never ideal and therefore the maximum flow rate is not equal to the average flow rate but the average flow rate is the value of interest to ensure an accurate and reproducible puffing.
We therefore propose to change the wording to: “The average flow rate shall be 18,3 ml/s ± 1,8 ml/s” and add an informative note.
