ISO/NP 4431 Dentistry -- Oral hygiene products -- Manual interdental cleaners, Non-Wire

Scope

This International Standard will specify requirements and test methods for performance criteria for nonwire manual interdental brushes consisting of a handle portion and a cleaning portion with emanating parts. It also specifies the accompanying information such as manufacturer’s instructions for use and labelling of the packaging.

Excluded are interdental brushes containing metal such as wire. This International Standard is not applicable to powered interdental brushes, manual toothbrushes, dental floss, tapes, and strings, or to interdental brushes covered by ISO 16409.

Purpose

The existing standard for interdental brushes is not applicable to those recently introduced into commerce made without wire to support and secure filaments. A new standard is needed to describe the attributes of a non-wire interdental cleaner.

This proposed new work item project is intended to continue the development of a standard for interdental cleaners which do not contain wire. Although similar to existing brushes with wire, the designs without wire have a number of different attributes requiring definition, testing methods, and standards. In particular, the standard is being proposed to provide a minimum level of durability performance to minimize the likelihood of negative impacts on users of the products.
