This proposed new part of the BS 8887 series specifies the process of remanufacturing luminaires. It emphasises the need for a remanufactured luminaire to be supported by robust technical documentation, testing and compliance assessment. It is intended to be used in conjunction with BS 8887-1, BS 8887-2, BS 8887-3.
The aim of this new part of BS 8887 is to give the lighting sector the vocabulary and procedures required to specify, plan and conduct work on luminaires beyond initial production and installation, apart from that of regular maintenance. This document provides clarity on the process involved in remanufacturing lighting products.
Remanufactured luminaires range from being unused and in original or unopened packaging, through to used products being sold to a second or third user in the product’s lifecycle. Remanufactured luminaires may meet their original design intent and specification, or be significantly altered in response to changed technology or requirements.
The purpose of this document is to provide a framework within which such work can be done. It offers a methodology that will underpin the work of the remanufacturer whilst providing confidence to the purchaser/end‐user of the remanufactured equipment that the remanufacturing work has been done to accepted industry norms.
Remanufacturing is an important process in the Circular Economy. Keeping luminaires or components in use for longer has significant potential benefits, including reducing the amount of equipment being sent for recycling or landfill, in turn reducing demand for virgin materials and energy and resource expenditure during production.
