The application of this document enables the certification bodies to meet the specific technical features and the particular risks in dealing with AI systems according to ISO/IEC 42001. This allows accreditation bodies and peer assessors to assess the competencies of conformity assessment bodies in an efficient and harmonized way and ensures the comparability and reproducibility of certificates confirming conformity with ISO/IEC 42001.
The requirements contained in this document shall be demonstrated by any body providing AIMS certification.
ISO/IEC 42001 is currently under development. It is anticipated that this standard will be used for the purpose of certifying artificial intelligence management systems within organizations. To ensure consistency of conformity assessment amongst conformity assessment bodies auditing and certifying AIMS within the scope of ISO/IEC 42001, it is essential that certification bodies meet the requirements of this standard.
ISO/IEC 17021-1 sets out criteria for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems. If such bodies are to be accredited as complying with ISO/IEC 17021-1 with the objective of auditing and certifying artificial intelligence management systems (AIMS) in accordance with ISO/IEC 42001, some additional requirements and guidance to ISO/IEC 17021-1 are necessary (e.g. auditor experience and qualification, calculation of audit time). This allows accreditation bodies and peer assessors to assess the competencies of conformity assessment bodies in a more efficient and harmonized way.
SC 42 therefore should develop a deliverable that will enable certification bodies to issue certificates to ISO/IEC 42001 in a competent manner. By facilitating peer assessment and accreditation of certification bodies providing audit and certification of ISO/IEC 42001, end users worldwide will benefit from a comparable quality and trust claim of the certificate and the certified artificial intelligence management system. This also paves the way for the mutual recognition of these certificates between countries which can thus simplify the market access for companies investing in such a certification. In consequence, the responsible use of AI in the market will be spurred.
