ISO/NP 20198 Metallic materials -- Steel -- Method of test for the determination of brittle crack arrest temperature (CAT)

Scope

This document is applicable to the determination of brittle crack arrest temperature(CAT) of rolled steel plates with thickness not greater than 200 mm.

This standard specifies the requirements for test method and test procedures when using the isothermal crack arrest test to judge a valid test result under isothermal conditions and in order to determine the crack arrest temperature.

Purpose

This document is applicable to the determination of brittle Crack Arrest Temperature(CAT) of steel plates through an isothermal crack arrest test. Generally, the embrittled zone is required in a CAT test. Two methods are considered to make the embrittled zone: The first one is electron beam welding (EBW) type which acts as a crack initiator and crack runway. This test method, however, has disadvantage of additional process to create an embrittled zone with EBW. The second one is a local temperature gradient (LTG) type which has been developed to overcome the limitations of the EBW type. The LTG system does not require additional EBW to develop a brittle zone to initiate a brittle crack. The LTG system is free of flaws. Therefore, this new work item is proposed to determine the brittle crack arrest temperature (CAT).
