Scope

This International Technical Specification

a) is intended to replace the guidance in IEC 61508-2 for complex semiconductors

b) adds additional guidance for analog and mixed signal integrated circuits

Purpose

IEC 61508 revision 2 was published in 2010. IEC 61508 revision 3 is planned for 2027. Work has been underway within IEC TC 65/SC 65A/MT 61508-1/2 for some years planning for revision 3. The requirements for complex semiconductors are at an advanced stage with broad agreement on the changes to be made. If we wait until revision 3 of IEC 61508 in 2027 the IEC 61508 standard may be overtaken by events and become not relevant for complex semiconductors. Therefore, the planned changes from IEC 61508 revision 3 f or complex semiconductors have been used to create a draft technical specification IEC TS 61508-2-1 with the intention of getting this in place within 18 months to 2 years and then withdrawing it when IEC 61508 revision 3 is published.
