ISO/PWI 18404 Quantitative methods in process improvement — Six Sigma — Competencies for key personnel and their organizations in relation to Six Sigma and Lean implementation

Scope

Scope of the revision of ISO 18404 :2015 includes all elements of the standard, including the Annexes and title. It also considers the connectivity with other relevant standards including, but not limited to ISO 13053 Parts 1 and 2. Consideration to be given on the use of standard for certification of individuals, organisations and training providers.

Areas in scope for consideration include;

• Realignment to the management system standard structure described in Annex SL (pages 118 to 140) within ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 Consolidated ISO Supplement — Procedures specific to ISO

• Additional roles, including; Yellow Belt / Entry level, Deployment Champion, Project Sponsor

• Change the layout of the competencies making it easier to see how the requirements grow through the levels

• Addition option of a joint "Lean & Six Sigma" competency framework (for all levels)

• Linking / reference to other standards ISO 13053 (Part 1 and 2), 9001, 16355 etc / Improved clarity on connection with and how the standards can be used together.

• Add in reference to Agile, Machine learning / AI, RPA, DfSS, Big Data 

Purpose

ISO 18404 has reached the 5-year age for review which was voted and approved in SC7 meeting in 2021. Since original publication there have been a number of suggested improvements received from those who have used the standard. BSI have also conducted a survey with 8 directed questions:

1) Addition of a Yellow Belt / Entry level competency framework

2) Separate competency framework for organisational assessment

3) Addition option of a joint "Lean & Six Sigma" competency framework (for all levels)

4) Addition of a Deployment Champion level competency framework

5) Addition of a Project Sponsor level competency framework

6) Improved clarity on connection with ISO 13053 (Part 1 and 2) and how the standards can be used together

7) Ensure the same competencies with the Lean and Six Sigma roles have the same relative competency number

8) Change the layout of the competencies making it easier to see how the requirements grow through the levels (i.e., all in one table)?

41 participants have responded to the survey, which enabled us prioritize the areas of improvements. The survey showed an overwhelming Yes for the proposed changes:

- 83.99% of Yes, where

42.99%% are highly important

31.18% are mid important

16.16% are low important

- 7.93% of No

- 2.93% not answered (precisely, no more than 3 respondents for questions Q5, Q6, Q7 and Q8)

The revision aims also to align the standard 18404 with Annex SL

The revision seeks to address as many of these as possible.
