It identifies the principles for functional safety communications defined in IEC 61784-3 that are relevant for this safety communication layer. This safety communication layer is intended for implementation in safety devices only.
This document defines mechanisms for the transmission of safety-relevant messages among participants within a distributed network using fieldbus technology in accordance with the requirements of the IEC 61508 series for functional safety. These mechanisms may be used in various industrial applications such as process control, manufacturing automation and machinery.
This document provides guidelines for both developers and assessors of compliant devices and systems.
The number of situations where people and automation equipment coexist has expanded by a progress of factory automation. Further safety is required in such situations. On the other hand, there is a market demand to minimize system changes and downtime by adding safety features to existing systems.
MECHATROLINK Safety realizes a safety field network by supporting safety measures which are specified in IEC 61784-3. MECHATROLINK Safety makes it possible to introduce the safety features without major changes to existing systems by combining with multi domain function of MECHATROLINK, and also contributes to solving problems at production field.
