ISO/PWI 18709 Packaging steel drums for uranium ore concentrate

Scope

This standard specifies the dimensions, material, construction, finishperformance requirements, test methods, naming, marking, transportation and storage of the packaging steel drums for uranium ore concentrate.

The packaging steel drum recommended by this standard is suitably applied to dry UOC, and the net weight of UOC is no more 450 kg.

This standard is applicable to the packaging steel drums for uranium ore concentrate (hereinafter referred to as packaging steel drum).

Purpose

This standard aims to provide the normative selection of packaging for uranium ore concentrate (hereinafter referred to as UOC), in order to facilitate the loading, unloading, transportation and other practical requirements of UOC. This standard does not prohibit the supplier and receiver of UOC from negotiating to choose other packaging that meets the requirements of IAEA Safety Standards. Nowadays, there is no unified and detailed standard for packaging steel drums all over the world, and there are quite big differences for packaging steel drums among factories and countries. It is not beneficial to the production, therefore, this standard attempts to avoid and overcome issues as follows:

(1) The strength of existing packaging steel drums is uneven, and there are risks and circumstances of steel drums deformation and product leakage during loading and unloading.

(2) The procedures of sampling and analysis are complicated, and it requires that steel drums could be easily opened and closed under conditions of ensuring safety and insurance.

(3) There are many difficulties in the construction of automatic clamping facilities in the uranium conversion plant due to different dimensions of packaging steel drums.

(4) There are no special steel stamps on the packaging steel drums, it is not conducive to radioactive waste management and treatment.

Comparison to other nuclear materials, the volume of trade and transportation of UOC is very large. If the uniform packaging steel drums would be selected during trade of UOC, it would be very beneficial to entire industry.

At the same time, the establishment of this standard could also save the processing cost of packaging steel drums, increase the exchange capacity of packaging steel drums, and improve the operability of implementing IAEA standards in the trade and transportation process of UOC.
