ISO/NP 23300-2 Railway infrastructure — Rail welding — Part 2: Aluminothermic welding

Scope

This document corresponds to the subsequent part of ISO 23300-1 "General requirements and test methods for rail welding" and specifies the requirements on rail aluminothermic welding, including the requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process, laboratory tests, contractor/welder, as well as the acceptance criteria of aluminothermic welds in track. In this document, 43 kg/m – 75 kg/m new flat bottomed rails of the same profiles and same steel grades are the subject of welding. This document is restricted to butt welding for connecting rail ends. This document does not cover safety regulation of welding operation.

Compliance with the requirements of this standard does not of itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic. This standard does not cover welds made between different rail sections, differently worn rails and different rail grades.

Purpose

Rail welding is an essential technology in the area of railway track for reducing noise and vibration on rail joints, improving ride comfort and reducing maintenance costs.

The working group “Rail Welding” (ISO/TC 269/SC 1/WG 03) was established in March of 2018. ISO 23300-1: “General Requirements and Test Methods for Rail Welding”is published. The subsequent parts of this series standard following Part 1 will be proposed as gas pressure welding (GPW), aluminothermic welding (ATW), flash butt welding (FBW) and enclosed arc welding (EAW). These subsequent parts, in addition to Part 1, specify specific requirements for each welding process. ATW is one of main processes of rail welding as specified in ISO 23300-1. ATW is widely used global with its features of economic, convenient, reliable and mobility.

Europe issued EN standard of rail ATW such as EN 14730-1 and EN 14730-2. China executes Chinese standard of rail ATW as TB/T1632.1 and TB/T1632.3. Other countries have their respective standard on rail ATW. The rail ATW standard varies from each country or region. An international standard for rail ATW is beneficial to unify different countries standard and promote the application of rail ATW. This ISO standard of “rail aluminothermic welding” shall coordinate with the ISO23300-1 in content and structure. The welding process requirements, quality issues, acceptance criteria, etc. for rail ATW shall be specified in this ISO standard.

This NWIP proposes to make an ISO standard of “rail aluminothermic welding” by application of the Migration Strategy on EN standard, taking consideration of the different ATW application situations in China, Japan and other non-European countries. The main purpose of this ISO standard is to fully apply the technical progress made on rail aluminothermic welding, in order to ensure the quality of rail welding and to improve the reliability of train operation worldwide.
