This includes adapting design and functionality to products and systems, to allow ease of use by any user, regardless of their abilities.
This document does not cover system to system communication.
This standard is not applicable to kitchen machines covered by IEC/TC 59 and IEC/TC 61.
This standard covers accessible systems for living independently (ASLI) which include, but are not limited to, domestic appliances, medical appliances, technical solutions and devices for environment control.
➢ Systems covers products, services, devices, user interfaces, technology, information and communication technologies (ICT) and built environment.
➢ Systems for living independently include safety and security technology, comfort related technology, technology and solutions for social and surroundings/environment control, care technology, for use at home, workplaces and educational places.
➢ ASLI also refer to design of accessible service environments. This includes accessing, interacting and using information about ASLI, as well as the ASLI itself.
➢ ASLI does not include personal assistive technology, medical devices or technology supporting administrative systems.
ASLI strengthens the users’ independence, safety, control of surroundings, independent living and social activities, independent of age and abilities. Systems for living independently will benefit all.
The aim of this standard is to
➢ ensure that technology is integrated, distributed in the surroundings or integrated in other technology.
➢ enhance the quality of life for everyone living independently by ensuring satisfactory accessibility in systems for living independently in everyday life both at home and elsewhere, and by improving both independence and participation in society.
The way the standard supports these challenges is to ensure that technical solutions, including hardware and software, are accessible for all as well as for users with diverse characteristics and capabilities. Users normally move between different places – different rooms, the home, the car, workplace, shops and outdoors – during a day. This requires interoperability between the technical solutions and accessible integrated solutions.
The focus of this standard is on:
➢ ASLI that requires interoperability with other types of systems;
➢ ASLI single products with multiple formats;
➢ ASLI user support and training;
➢ The overall user accessibility to the ASLI.This includes accessibility of the product and technology itself, accessible formats of the information concerning its use and how to install and maintain it.
