PNW TS 56-1956 ED1: Dependability Management - Application guide - Guide on Reliability

Scope

This part of IEC 60300 gives guidance on the basic principles of reliability analysis and assurance techniques that are applicable to any business model. It is particularly applicable to relia bility in the design, manufacturing, management and decommissioning of products, equipment, services, plant or structures, and gives guidance on matters of common interest to any business supplying or purchasing products, services, plant or structures.

This part of IEC 60300 provides all managers and engineers involved in the specification, design, development, manufacture, acceptance and use of engineering artefacts with guidance on effective reliability analysis and assurance. This standard is also applic able to anyone who needs to understand how to develop, manufacture and support systems and equipment which meet the needs of the user by functioning as and when required; this recognises that any “system” will include human aspects.

This standard makes no assumptions concerning management structure or organisational capability and recognises that some stakeholders in a design soluti on may not have influence throughout the lifecycle: e.g. off-the-shelf (OTS) purchasers may have no influence on inherent relia bility.

Purpose

This document is the final essential ‘head document’ which with IEC 60300 -3-10 and IEC 60300-3-
14 address the principle elements of dependability: reliability, maintainability and maintenance and
supportability and support. The document has been developed by an international team within TC56
over the last 10 years to address the methods and techniques associated with a reliability
programme, either undertaken independently or as part of wider dependability management. The
document is believed to be close to CD quality as it has been developed as part of the maintenance
of IEC 60300-1, IEC 60300-3-10 and IEC 60300-3-14 with the intent of providing consistent format
and content to support a dependability programme.
