NOTE Temperature differentials relevant for thermal shock resistance are caused by heat radiation and lead to temperature differential in the glass area.
This document does not determine suitability for purpose. Resistance to thermal shock is only one part of the design process, which could also need to take into account the resistance to perpendicular or/and in-plane loading. Those can be determined according to EN 16612, CEN/TS 19100-1, CEN/TS 19100-2 and CEN/TS 19100-3
Other relevant design aspects could be:
• environmental factors (e.g. sound insulation, thermal properties),
• safety characteristics (e.g. fire performance, mode of breakage in relation to human safety, security).
This document does not apply to wired or unwired channel shaped glass, glass blocks and glass pavers.
The temperature differentials between the external and the internal surface of the glass pane are out of the scope of this standard
The thermal load is derived from meteorological data, interior temperatures of given building type, location, orientation etc. A guideline on national climatic data determination will be given in the Annex A.
Thermally induced stress in glass panes in buildings is caused by an area of the glass heating up, when the sun shines on it and when ambient temperatures rise, more quickly and to a higher temperature than other areas of the glass, which are concealed within a frame or may be subjected to a shadow from its direct environment. The warmer area expands relatively to the cooler areas and causes tensile stress to be developed in the glass. If the temperature difference between the warmer and the cooler areas is sufficiently high, the stress can cause cracks to develop, most commonly from the edges of the glass.
The purpose of this standard is to develop a method to assess the possibility of such risk to occur.
