PNW TS 2-2102 ED1 Technical Specification for on-line partial discharge measurements of rotating machine windings supplied from an inverter

Scope

This part of the IEC 60034-27 series deals with the on-line measurement of partial discharges on both rotor and stator windings that are supplied from converters. The tests are applicable to both Type I and Type II insulation systems, encompassing windings rated 300 V and above.

Purpose

IEC TC2 documents already cover partial discharge (PD) measurement 50/60 Hz motors, as well as off-line PD measurement in windings supplied from impulse voltage sources. A document for the on-line measurement of PD on windings supplied from variable speed convertors is not available. End users of such machines would like an on-line method to aid with winding insulation condition assessment and maintenance planning. Few such commercial on-line PD measurement systems are available now. This TS is to educate users on why on-line PD measurement on converter-fed windings is different from that on machines operating with sinusoidal waveforms. It will also allow for a standard that may help lead the market to more uniform test procedures, as the technology develops.

This new project has been discussed within TC2 MT10 during the last two meetings, and we have agreed that this project is useful.
