Scope

This part of IEC 60335 deals with the safety of robots and mobile robots intended for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V, including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. This standard covers appliances for indoor use.  

This standard does not apply to

– vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances and automatic battery-operated cleaners for household use (IEC 60335-2-2);

– battery chargers (IEC 60335-2-29);

– particular requirements for robotic battery powered electrical lawnmowers (IEC 60335-2-107);

– appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601-1);

– automatic floor treatment machines for commercial use (IEC 63327);

– robots and robotic devices: Safety requirements of personal care robots (ISO 13482);

– electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery (IEC 60745 series, IEC 61029 series, IEC 62841 series);

– machines designed for use in corrosive or explosive environments (dust, vapour or gas; IEC 60079);

– on-road vehicles capable of speeds higher than 25 km/h. 

Purpose

Manual mode products covered within IEC TC 61 are being more and more converted into appliances with various degrees of autonomy and then used in household and similar environments. This standard provides requirements and their verification to ensure the safety of operation to various degrees of autonomy of the aforementioned appliances.

It does not overlap with the work conducted by other TCs within IEC or ISO for similar matters (e.g. ISO/TC 299).

The specific safety concerns caused by the design function of a specific type of appliance will need to be addressed in the relevant Part 2 of IEC 60335 series.
