Scope

This British Standard gives recommendations for the organization, staffing, operation and management of companies providing door supervision services, whether contracted or in-house, to licensed premises or events. It also provides recommendations to other individuals, companies, organizations and designated premises supervisors who provide or employ door supervisors.

NOTE 1 Companies and other employers of door supervisors are advised that the recommendations in this British Standard do not necessarily fulfil the specific local authority or Security Industry Authority (SIA) requirements, and that they need to satisfy themselves separately as to their responsibilities in that respect.

Purpose

This standard needs to be revised following the committee review of the Manchester Bombing Enquiry and Report, the new Protect Legislation and to bring it in line with BS 10800, the overarching provision of security services standard.

We need to ensure it is relevant to all venues, rather than just clubs/bars and should cover the same audience as BS 8406 Event stewarding – Code of practice as well as hotels where a door supervisor could be deployed in a security licensable role.

It will also be revised to better reflect the content of the scope.

The standard is aimed at security companies and other organisations providing door supervision services.  The largest regulated sector of the private security industry in terms of the number of licences issued is door supervision.

251 companies have been approved for Door Supervision under the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) and they will be mandated to work to the standard.
