Draft Decision 3/2022 - Approval of PWI for Mountaineering equipment â Interface between mountaineering boots for adults and crampons - Requirements and test methods

Scope

This standard specifies the dimensions and characteristics of the interfaces, requirements, test methods and marking of ski mountaineering boots and of clipon binding crampons which are fixed together with attachment at the boot toe and boot heel, the proper fixed function of which depends on the dimensions and design of the interfaces.

Purpose

Crampons for mountaineering with clipon bindings (see definition in EN 893 3.6) are fixed to mountaineering boots. The safety of the user depends of the quality of the fixation of the crampons to the mountain boots. The increasing of the boot toe and heel designs leads to a bad fixation of the crampon with the boot with, for consequences the loss of crampons and therefore high risk of injury for the mountaineer (crampons are PPE category 2 to prevent risk of falls due to slipping). This standard will permit to have compatible boot and crampons design (like the existing standard for compatibility between skiboots and skibindings ISO 9523) and will tests the resistance of the fixation crampon/boot. The goal is to improve the safety of mountaineers walking or climbing with crampons.
