ISO/TC 28 N 3136, ISO/NP 3014 Petroleum and related products -- Determination of the smoke point of kerosine and aviation turbine fuel

Scope

This document describes a manual and an automated procedure for determination of the smoke point. This document is applicable to kerosene and aviation turbine fuel.

Purpose

Smoke point is a property specified in several kerosene and aviation fuel specifications, both in ASTM/DefSTAN as well as in many national specifications.

An automatic method is missing in the actual ISO 3014 text and will be added in this revision. The automatic instrument uses a digital camera to detect smokeless flame instead of operator eyes, hence the precision could be effectively improved. A high accuracy barometer is integrated in the instrument to monitor the air pressure and recommend the determination or selection of the correction factor. This automatic instrument is widely used in labs.

Commercially available wicks will be added, which may save 3h by excluding extraction process, so the testing time will be shorten to about 15 min, and the usage of toluene can be avoid in this step.

The improvement of this test method will contribute to achieve better precision. On the other hand, reducing test time and toluene usage make it more favourable to operator.
