CEN/TC 19 N 2154, Revision of an EN 14214 Liquid petroleum products - Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) for use in diesel engines and heating applications - Requirements and test methods

Scope

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for marketed and delivered fatty acid methyl esters (hereafter known as FAME) to be used either as fuel for diesel engines and for heating applications at 100 % concentration, or as an extender for distillate fuel for diesel engines in accordance with the requirements of EN 590 and for heating fuel. At 100 % concentration it is applicable to fuel for use in diesel engines and in heating applications designed or subsequently adapted to run on 100 % FAME.

Purpose

EN14214:2012 was amended for the first time in 2014 and for the second time in 2019. A revision of the standard is at least necessary to update the method references for e.g. ester content, methanol content and other test methods. In addition, significant changes in the methods for the determination of total contamination (EN 12662) and the determination of metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P - EN14538) and related arbitration procedures or limits need to be considered.

With EN17057, a suitable test method for the direct determination of the content of saturated monoglycerides in FAME has already been published. This standard should be included in EN 14214 gain experience in all member states with saturated monoglycerides and finally make the standard more suitable for cold operability. In order to simplify EN 14214 and to avoid confusion between the direct determination (EN17057) and the calculation estimation in Annex C of EN 14214, this informative Annex should also be updated.
