Scope
The proposed revision of ISO 16739-1:2018 focusses on additions to the data schema and reference data to further support the infrastructure domains, particularly for bridges, roads, rails, ports and waterways and common foundations, such as alignment, terrain, strata and earthworks.
The scope of the proposed revision is in line with the overall scope mention of ISO 16739-1:2018 “to include data definitions for infrastructure assets over their life cycle as well”. The general scope and title of ISO 16739 being an international standard for “data sharing in the construction and facility management industries” remains valid.
Purpose
Due to the enhancement of the scope of ISO 16739-1:2018 to extend the coverage in the infrastructure domain, it was required by the infrastructure domains experts to work on the addition or modification of existing data schema coverage, such as entities and type definition mainly focused on buildings. Such changes were executed with the goal of backward compatibility in mind.
The proposed revision of ISO 16739-1 reflects enhancements made during the domain schema extensions for bridges, roads, railways, ports and waterways, the common schema requirements for alignment, linear positioning, particular geometry representations of sweeps along an alignment, terrains, strata, and earthworks. Intensive harmonization works between these schema extension projects had been carried out. Also, an early software implementing phase to verify the enhancements of the coverage of the IFC standard into the infrastructure domains had been undertaken.
The anticipation, that further revisions of ISO 16739-1 (IFC) will cover the infrastructure domain in more detail is already part of the overall scope statement of ISO 16739-1:2018.
Therefore, the proposed extension does not change the original designation for the standard. The changes are within the scope of ISO 16739-1:2018. The proposed revision has already been checked by the domain experts panel and commissioned by end-users from the A-liaison organisation buildingSMART International.
