To enable safer, more efficient storage to a substantial height this well-used, well-regarded standard stands alone, as there is no alternative European national standard. However, now 29 years old, it is unable to address the stacking safety, external storage, and other structural failures common today. These are caused by new unregulated fastening methods and materials which were unavailable when the standard was first published.
A revision of BS 7611:1992 will permit the simplification of testing requirements, increase reuse, and better ensure safe and satisfactory box quality. It will achieve this by using new CEN and ISO wood and steel component performance standards introduced since the 1992 publication.
