CEN/TC 346 N 998 N 99, Revision of an EN 16141 2012 Conservation of cultural heritage – Guidelines for management of environmental conditions – Open storage facilities: definitions and characteristics of collection centres

Scope

This European Standard defines the functions and characteristics of open storage facilities (collection centers). These can be independent or integrated into cultural establishments. They are dedicated to the preservation, storage, management of, and access to collections. NOTE: For the infrastructures and technical equipment of these open storage facilities, see EN 16893.

Purpose

The concept defined in EN 16141 is now shared and implemented by professionals. As EN 16893:2018 “Conservation of Cultural

Heritage - Specifications for location, construction and modification of buildings or rooms intended for the storage or use of heritage collections” has now been adopted, it is necessary to amend EN 16141:2012:

- to make the necessary references to EN 16893 in EN 16141;

- to clarify the objectives of both documents, EN 16141 being a methodology document defining what is an area dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage, its organisation (logistics) and its management;

- to make consistent some specifications (e.g. 6.1 Fire protection);

- to add a general clause on risk analysis in EN 16141;

- to harmonize terminology.
