ISO/TC 82 Earth-moving machinery and Advanced automated mining systems (possibly also Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry) – Secure High Speed Data Communication- ISO/TC 127/SC 3 - Preliminary work item proposal of ISO 23870 series

Scope

This document provides a general overview of the ISO 23870 series.

Other parts of the series focus on capabilities like the physical layer, network layer, data transfer, security etc.

The ISO 23870 series specifies the general requirements for the secure high speed data communication interface used in the following industries:

● earth-moving machines as defined in ISO 6165,

● Advanced automated mining systems (ISO/TC 82/SC 8)

● Agricultural electronics (ISO/TC 23/SC 19)

● (Possibly) other off-road mobile machines It covers the following architecture elements:

● Connector specification (OSI Layer 1)

● Wiring specification (OSI Layer 1)

● Data format (OSO Layer 2)

● Protocol specification (OSI Layer 3-4)

● Security specification (OSI Layer 2-5)

● Key management

● Authorization and Authentication

This intent is to create an industry standard to allow communication to occur between the base machine and OEM & non-OEM devices While this standard does not preclude the use of this standard as the primary machine bus (eg. transmission to engine control), it does not require it. Note: This specification does not address the packeting of the data (e.g. OSI Layer 6 & 7) on the data bus.

Purpose

Existing networks and protocols in use on EMM today are incapable of supporting the speed, bandwidth, and security needs that this protocol will address. As it relates to EMM, this standard will enable future innovations in machine-learning, artificial intelligence, and object identification; it will also support ongoing work on ISO 17757 (Earthmoving machinery and mining -- Autonomous and semi-autonomous machine system safety) and ISO/AWI 21815 (Earth-moving machinery -- Collision awareness and avoidance).

This standard will also facilitate the use of on-highway standards and infrastructure. Consider the following: Is there a verified market need for the proposal? What problem does this standard solve? What value will the document bring to end-users? See Annex C of the ISO/IEC Directives part 1 for more information.
