CEN/TC 135 N 1024 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures a Reuse of structural steel

Scope

This CEN/TS gives provisions for the execution when re-using structural steel for EXC1 and EXC2 structures, including:

• Suitability assessment

• Deconstruction

• Assessment and testing

• Fabrication

• Documentation

• Design recommendations

Purpose

The environmental advantages of re-using reclaimed structural steel are considerable, compared to the common practice of recycling by re-melting scrap. There are also potential cost savings. There is a need to standardize how to inspect and test to ensure that reclaimed structural steelwork can be used with confidence in a new structure. When using reclaimed steel, the design is based on the material properties, maintaining the relationship between design assumptions and material resistance. It is therefore appropriate that re-fabricated, reclaimed structural steelwork may be CE Marked in accordance with EN 1090-1.

For these reasons, a new CEN/TS would be developed based on a series of documents and reports prepared in Norway, Sweden, Finland, UK and EU.
