Standards Development

Scope

This standard gives recommendations and design principles for tactile information for a number of different use cases. It builds on published standards and guidelines to provide a comprehensive ‘tool kit’ to produce maps and diagrams for wayfinding, orientation, and interpretative applications.

The standard will not provide recommendation or guidance on tactile paving surfaces. This standard will not provide recommendation or guidance on digital wayfinding and orientation systems.

Purpose

The purpose of the standard is to ensure clarity and consistency in the provision of tactile information ensuring familiarity and consistency for the user. The standard will help in understanding the different formats that tactile information can take and the circumstances in which they are recommended. This includes the consistency of the materials and symbols used; the quality and legibility of information in different situations; and the most suitable locations.

The standard will provide guidance on the following areas.

• Different use cases. To include engagement and short-term use. Fixed maps for orientation use. Portable maps for orientation use. Tactile objects, images, and models. Personalized maps for education and traveling.

• Production and materials. To include short term options. Quick production. Indoor and outdoor considerations. Location.

• Design considerations. To include how much information should be available. The height of tactile marks. The use of textures. Provide a lexicon of common symbols to promote a uniform experience for the user.
