In the light of the growing awareness for air pollution, indoor air cleaners are meanwhile widely used to improve the indoor air quality. In the sense of the global harmonization of standards, TC 59/JWG 17 is working on developing a new IEC standard for testing the performance of household and similar air cleaning appliances. The corresponding Standard 63086 Part 1, which describes the general requirements for testing, was published in 2020. As a next step, test methods for the reductions of particulate pollutants are being developed in Part 2-1 standard.
The test method for measurement of air cleaner performance changes with particle loading needs to be developed as well. Especially, the following aspects shall be considered:
1) Unfortunately, the performance of many indoor air cleaners will change as the air cleaner system loads with the pollutant.
2) Manufacturers may be able to use this information to predict maintenance intervals.
3) The method shall be applicable for a large variety of different cleaning technologies.
4) Some countries have standards for air cleaner’s filter life. Some test methods utilize large amounts of test materials and can take considerable time to obtain results. Therefore, it is also necessary to set up the test methods using pollutants which may help to reduce testing time
