It covers light stability, ozone stability, thermal stability and humidity stability of photographic prints. This document is applicable to any digital prints, which include photographic prints created by silver halide, inkjet, electrophotography, thermal diffusion, and others.
In more detail, for the purpose of specification of image permanence, this document defines the specific test method, test condition and data analysis procedure from those listed in ISO 18936, ISO 18937, ISO 18941, and ISO 18946. Furthermore, this document specifies the content and procedure for graphical reporting of test results as basic technical communication of image permanence performance of photographic prints.
Test methods for measurement of image permanence for the four most important environmental stress factor for indoor use of photographs are described in the following ISO documents.
ISO 18936 for thermal stability
ISO 18937 for light stability
ISO 18941 for ozone gas stability
ISO 18946 for humidity fastness
Each document includes variants of the test methods, test conditions and data analysis procedures to cover different purpose. For the purpose of an overall specification for indoor image permanence performance, it is necessary to specify which method, which condition and which data analysis procedure is selected.
This document, Part 1 of ISO 18940, specifies which test method, test conditions and data analysis procedure are selected from those listed in ISO 18936, ISO 18937, ISO 18941, and ISO 18946. Furthermore, this document specifies the content and procedure for displaying graphs, which is the most basic reporting method. Graphical reports are a powerful means of communication with customers, which are often used on technical information of products which are displayed on internet homepage, leaflet, and posters at trade shows.
Graphic reporting is essential for Part 1, which is also the foundation for developing end-point criteria and specifications of image permanence in Part 2 and Part 3.
