It describes a framework that addresses all phases of the development and deployment lifecycle. This includes the derivation of suitable safety requirements on the function, considerations related to data quality and completeness, architectural measures for the control and mitigation of failures, tools used to support AI, verification and validation techniques as well as the evidence required to support an assurance argument for the overall safety of the system.
The purpose of this document is to provide industry-specific guidance on the use of safety-related Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)-based functions in road vehicles. As such it will define a set of safety principles compatible with existing approaches currently defined within the standards ISO 26262 (functional safety) and ISO 21448 (Safety of the intended functionality). It will seek to address any gaps in ISO 26262 specifically related to the safe implementation of AI components and support processes such as tool qualification. The document will also support the harmonization of concepts already described in Annexes of ISO 21448 and ISO/TR 4804 whilst extending these with specific guidance regarding the definition of safety-related properties of AI/ML and the creation of associated safety evidence along the development and deployment lifecycle. The document shall build upon guidance contained within ISO/IEC TR 5469 (under development) and shall not be restricted to specific AI/ML techniques or specific vehicle functions.
