CEN/TC 207 N 2186, Revision of EN 12520:2015 Furniture - Strength, durability and safety - Requirements for domestic seating

Scope

This European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for the safety, strength and durability of all types of domestic seating for adults.

It does not apply to ranked seating, seating for non-domestic use, office work chairs, office visitors chairs, chairs for educational institutions, outdoor seating and to links for linked seating for which European Standards exist.

It does not include requirements for the durability of upholstery materials, castors, reclining and tilting mechanisms and seat height adjustment mechanisms. It does not include requirements for electrical safety. It does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing, degradation, flammability and ergonomics.

The tests are based on use by persons weighing up to 110 kg.

Purpose

A revision of the EN 12520 published in 2015 is needed to update the technical content of it, to take into consideration requirements from CEN/TR 17202 for finger entrapments, to implement the standard with the revision of EN 1022 and the consequences of it in order to ensure the safety of furniture for use domestic areas, to indicate suitable test methods for durability of electrically operated furniture, to clarify testing for single column seating, to propose new tests methods used by laboratories using the standard since some years and to correct mistakes or possible misinterpretations.
