It does not apply to measurement systems designed for specialized testing of near visual acuity, e.g., low vision or low contrast charts or those intended for transillumination, or electronically generated systems.
The purpose of this International Standard is to provide for standardized near vision charts for general measurement, which will enable assessment of near vision over a limited, but clinically useful, range. The measurement of near vision is dependent on several factors, such as distance visual acuity, accommodation capability, near vision correction and illumination. There is currently no international standard for assessing near vision, notwithstanding that such assessments take place routinely in clinics and hospitals on a daily basis throughout the world. Such a standard will enable results to be compared particularly when decisions about clinical management are being undertaken and also when referrals are taking place.
