ISO/TC 172/SC 7 N 2209, ISO/NP 8980-6 Ophthalmic optics -- Finished single-vision corrective lenses -- Part 6: Requirements and test methods for claimed performances

Scope

This part of ISO 8980 specifies requirements and test methods to enable validation of specific claims for properties of uncut and edged finished spectacle lenses.

This International Standard applies to those claims that are additional to the requirements and test methods in the other ISO spectacle lens standards.

This standard can be applied at all stages of the supply chain from the manufacturer to the intended wearer.

Purpose

There is no International Standard for CLAIMED performances of uncut finished spectacle lenses. Considering the numbers of spectacle lenses manufactured every year and the number of users, China National Standard Body, SAC would like to establish a new international standard to enable validation of claims for uncut finished spectacle lenses.

Manufacturers globally face challenges in the regulation of lens products and various product claims. Given the large volume of lens export – the challenge was identified by China, but also influences globally.

To better protect all points in the distribution chain regarding claimed performance, from manufacturer to end users, this standard provides an opportunity to clearly validate their product claims. China has promoted the establishment of a mandatory optical resin lens standard– QB/T 2506 in 2001, which provides requirements for claimed performances such as refractive index, blue light protection and UV protection. The QB standard provided a basis for the development of an ISO standard and will ensure a standard which is globally effective.

In recently years, as AR coated lens become the mainstream choice of consumers, the coating cleaning performance (often claimed as water repellency, easy clean and dust resistance) has become the new focus for both manufacturer and consumers. A new challenge that needs to be addressed. Moreover, as the observed trend of added features and functionalities in lens product, it is foreseeable that there will be more claims appear in the market. Over the past 3 years a work group has reviewed and agreed to the need for a standard relating to lens claims. A consolidated draft and clear set of claims has been developed as a result of these discussions.

This proposed new standard, is therefore to set the tolerance and limits for the CLAIMED performances mentioned above, but more importantly, it provides the capability of manage future challenges in this dynamic developing spectacle lens industry.
