Scope
This International Standard applies to displays of optotypes by clinical visual acuity assessment systems that use recognition of high-contrast optotypes and that are designed for general use including optotypes printed on opaque media, those intended for transillumination, electronically generated or projected displays. It does not apply to systems designed for specialized testing of visual acuity, e.g. legal certifications of blindness, low vision or low contrast charts.
Purpose
The purpose of this International Standard is to provide for standardized visual acuity charts for general assessment, which will enable the assessment of visual acuity over a limited, but clinically useful, range of acuities. There is no single international standard at present that meets such a provision, notwithstanding the fact that visual acuity charts are routinely used as an essential clinical tool throughout the world in hospitals and clinics on a daily basis. At present there are two standards specifying Visual acuity testing (ISO 8596) and Chart Displays (ISO 10938), but from a manufacturing point of view, these are not stand alone standards. They are linked together in such a way that both standards have to be used, although neither contains the necessary requirements to enable a manufacturer to produce a standardised visual acuity chart.
