CEN/TC 442 N 685 Professions and competence related to the Building Information Management

Scope

Definition of requirements of competence, knowledge and skills related to the Information Management enabled by the Information Modeling according to the EN ISO 19650 Standards for qualification purposes. Definition of requirements of a BIM Management System, based on EN ISO 9001, which an organization must implement to improve the efficiency of the planning, design, production, operation and possible decommissioning process. The purpose is to provide functional elements for the certification of the BIM management system to the organization.

Purpose

In December 2018 UNI published a national standard, as UNI 11337-7 support by UNI/PdR 74, dealing with the qualification of the BIM related Practictioners and Professionals. Such a standard has been performed because of a national law decree concerning the professions, acknowledging different roles, namely BIM Manager, BIM Coordinator, BIM Specialist, CDE Manager. At European level, the standardization of the roles, to be furtherly certified, seems unviable because there are different conditions, regulations and cultures. Only the neutral notion of Information Manager seems to be accepted everywhere. Nonetheless, definitions, contents and taxonomies regarding the expected capabilities and skills of the practictioners and professionals involved within the Information Management need to be agreed on at European level, taking apart the formal roles. The purpose is to have a reference document, which allows to identify the knowledge and skills of a professional and to compare the skills of BIM operators through third-party conformity assessment (ISO 17000 series) for the free movement of people in Europe. The European markets could hugely benefit from the statement of the capabilities and skills in relation to an evolution of the field towards the data-driven projects and processes. In 2019 UNI published an other document about BIM management system whose contents take into consideration the professional figures of UNI 11337 and EN ISO 9001. It's importan to define both requirements. See also Doc. CEN/TC 442 N. 468.
