The proposed method is divided into the quantitative method which measures the thermal resistance and the thermal conductivity with the heat flow measurement, and the qualitative method without heat flow measurement.
The former quantitative method can apply not only the insulation layer but also whole throughout wall.
This document especially aims to test the furnished insulation layer in the walls. It demonstrates a screening test with drilling a small diameter borehole through the walls with the presumed insulation layer.
Visual inspection with a borescope and measuring the temperature distribution by inserting the temperature sensor, the qualitative futures of the insulation layer is evaluated. Adding the measurement of the heat flow rate, thermal conductance (resistance) is quantitively evaluated.
The method of measuring the insulation performance of the existing building will be used when the building owner of the used building wants to evaluate the degradation or existence of the thermal insulation layer in the wall.
The visual observation is useful to evaluate the degree of the natural degradation or the existence of the insulation layer and the simple test for estimating the quantitative features of the insulation layer is also useful.
The estimation of the insulation layer will be referred in the market of the used buildings trade or owner’s judgement for the renovation of the thermal insulation to attain the further energy saving and comfort thermal condition.
The proposed method is indeed responding to this requirement.
The measurement method proposed here is not a non destructive method since it uses visual inspection inside the wall however only quite small borehole such as the hole of pin is used and substantially no repair is required.
The methods proposed here is observing thermal insulation layer and measuring the thermal conductance (thermal resistance) of the insulation layer and does not aim to measure the wall thermal conductance, Regarding ISO 9869-1 and ISO 9869-2, it is need to install apparatus for measure temperature both indoor and outdoor.
However, this proposing measurement method may install the measurement tools indoor only (it maynot be necessary to set it outdoor).
