CEN/TC 234 N1306 Draft CEN-TC 234 DEC 03/2021 Gas infrastructure – Quality of gas – Hydrogen used in converted/rededicated gas systems

Scope

The standard defines the quality of hydrogen, i.e. its parameters and limiting values, used within converted/rededicated European natural gas systems at the exit point to the end-user.

Purpose

The purpose of this NWI is to define the properties and quality of hydrogen as a gaseous fuel, transported and distributed to the points of use by a converted/rededicated natural gas system. It will comprise the properties of hydrogen in applications as feedstock and for combustion purposes.

This NWI for hydrogen in converted/rededicated natural gas systems takes into account the condition of existing piping with possibly liquid and solid deposits.

Many parameters given in this NWIP are deduced from EN 16726.

The proposed parameters are verified by German project results (HyQual) which have been consulted in combination with end-users'' specifications. In the project, different sources of hydrogen have been evaluated, such as pyrolysis, steam reforming, electrolysis (Chlor-Alkali process and water electrolysis).

Furthermore, the proposal takes biological hydrogen production process into account.

This NWI is supposed to balance the requirements of gaseous hydrogen for the producer, the different grid operators and the end-users consumers, respectively in order to set- up a reliable backbone of futures energy supply.

The following aspects require close co-operation respectively co-ordination with other TCs (CEN-CLC/JTC 6, CEN/TC 268, ISO/TC 197, TCs for equipment and application ): - taking into account both natural gas systems and new build hydrogen systems; - hydrogen qualities for fuel cell applications EN 17124: 07-2019 (CEN/TC 268 WG 5, legally binding in some countries, e.g. DE)
