JTC1-SC25/3018/NP Information Technology—Home Electronic System—Guidelines for product interoperability—Part 4: Event encoding

Scope

This is a proposal for a new Part 3 and Part 4 of ISO/IEC 18012 Information technology–Home Electronic System–Guidelines for product interoperability in order to specify a lexicon of objects for the Interoperability Domain (ID). This NWIP specifically proposes to specify:

1) a lexicon that specifies ID base objects and their associated properties and input/output event types (i.e., in the form of a list of ID sensor, actuator, and control objects), and object state actions, which can be used to define application models, and

2) An event exchange format that defines the encoding of individual events in the ID. This event format will be used to encode events for exchange across the “event bus” within the ID.

Purpose

Purpose and justification:

The purpose of this proposal is to complement and augment the taxonomy and interoperability model defined in ISO/IEC 18012-2:2012 Guidelines for product interoperability–Part 2: Taxonomy and application model.

Part 2 provides the general basis for and HES interoperability framework, including the architectural model for and “event bus” and interworking functions (i.e., translation functions) for objects on different networks. Part 2 also provides and application example. The new part 3 and part 4 are needed to extend the ISO/IEC 18012 standard series by specifying a basis for product development and for the definition of specific application models contained in other proposed HES standards.

Part 3 will specify a set of canonical objects for HES. Part 4 will specify an event-exchangeencoding format for transfer within the ID.

Market relevance:

Manufacturers and vendors of all sizes and sectors in the home and building systems market will be able to make and offer interoperable products within the scope of the HES environment. Such interoperability offers to create significant market synergy, expand the available range of applications, and generally serve the interests of consumers, manufacturers, vendors, and society as a whole.
