Purpose: Set limits for boron and other elements in slime or other similar materials to better protect children's health and correct the problem with the barium limit of modelling clay. Reason: Slimes are popular among children in recent years, but its chemical risks have caused widespread concern. Borax, which has been proved to be harmful to children's health for its reproductive and developmental toxicity, is widely used in in slimes as cross-linking agents. ISO/TC 181 registered a preliminary work item (23785) to develop limits for the migration of boron from some toy materials in 2018 and finalized a draft working document in 2020. ISO/TC 181 decide to proceed with the project as an amendment to ISO 8124-3:2020 which requires an expansion of the scope to include migration limits for boron at the TC 181 Virtual meeting October 2020.
