Find out what cookies we use and how to disable themThis standard provides guidelines for the design and testing of an Automatic Watertight Ventilation Shutdown System (AWVSS) used to prevent or delay the sinking of a vessel. The application of this standard is limited to small craft with a length of hull, LH, as defined in ISO 8666:2020, of up to 24 m, and equipped with inboard engines.
The vessels that are not included in this standard are as follows:
- Vessels without enclosed engine room or with outboard engine type where watertight integrity of engine room is not applicable
- Vessels without propulsion system
Note: AWVSS is not intended to be installed in every ventilation system.
An increased number of marine safety accidents is becoming a major concern to serious damages or loss of human lives. Despite the precise designs and constructions to maintain the stability and buoyancy, sinking accidents of small crafts are continuing to occur.
Automatic Watertight Ventilation Systems help prevent ingress of water which cause the damage of machinery and maintain the buoyancy of the craft by blocking the air flow and keeping the air mass inside. The air space trapped in the compartment will provide buoyancy to help keep the boat afloat.
The safety of the vessel can be increased by adapting this system. The air mass blocked inside the vessel helps maintain buoyancy and prevent or delay the sinking of the vessel. This can be an additional measure to enhance safety and the survival in case of the accident as it allows to increase the available time of rescuing human lives.
In this regard, this standard was written to provide the guidelines for the design and testing procedure of an Automatic Watertight Ventilation System used to prevent or delay a vessel’s sinking.
The ultimate goal is to provide an acceptable test and verification methods to provide consistency to the quality and design of the AWVSS system to help assure the safety of those onboard.
