This standard
- defines the terms used;
- defines test and measuring circuits which may be used;
- specifies methods for calibration and requirements of the instrument used for calibration;
- provide guidance on test procedures;
- provide some assistance concerning the discrimination of dielectric loss from external interference
This standard is primarily concerned with dielectric loss measurements for electrical equipment, including power transformers, bushings, switches, circuit breaks, instrument transformers, etc. The tests of insulation materials (solid, liquid, gas, etc.) or power electronics components are NOT included in this standard.
The measurement of dielectric loss is an effective method to determine the insulation status of electrical equipment. Over ten thousand electrical equipment manufacturers conduct dielectric loss measurement tests worldwide.
Several IEC standards recommend the dielectric loss measurement test, but these standards do not provide specific test methods, test conditions, normative test procedure requirements, etc.
The absence of the normative test method, procedure, or circuit diagram affects the test result significantly and limits the range of applications of dielectric loss as an index of equipment insulation status.
This standard aims to specify the general principles of dielectric loss measurements, including typical test circuits, general test procedures, and dielectric loss measurement systems' technical requirements.
