ISO/NP 6893 Jewellery and precious metals -- Quality control of batches and sets of small diamonds -- Terminology, classification and test methods

Scope

This document specifies the terminology, classification and the methods that are used for the description and the quality control of batches and sets of unmounted polished colourless diamonds with single weight smaller than or equal to 0,25 carat (ct).

This document applies to batches and sets of natural, unmounted, polished diamonds. Its use is not to be claimed for fancy coloured diamonds, synthetic diamonds, treated diamonds, assembled stones, neither for single diamonds, nor for single stones.

This document aims to clarify and ease the relationship between companies decorating their manufactured products with small diamonds and diamantaires which consequently strengthen the endconsumer confidence in the jewellery industry, the watchmaking industry and the diamond industry in large.

Purpose

The jewel and watch industry sets very large quantities of small diamonds (mixed and baguettes) on their products. The price of diamonds is directly related to their quality which is only standardized for large diamonds - ISO 24016 applies to diamonds over 0,25 ct. Hence, the need to define a specific standard for the quality control of diamonds weighing less than 0,25 ct and sold in lots. This new draft standard is intended for diamonds that are subject to statistical treatment for all or part of their controls
