ISO/NP 6881 International Numbering for official animal identification schemes

Scope

Since 1996 many national schemes and databases have been developed worldwide to electronically identify and officially register animals. They were all based on the ISO 11784 Standard: “Radiofrequency identification of animals - Code structure” which was published in 1996 together with ISO 11785. ISO 11875 is based on 134.2 KHz Low Frequency (LF) 128 Bit Transponder Technology. In the meantime, Transponders based on Ultra High Frequency (UHF) technology are present on the market and in some cases could be used as alternative Technology for the official electronic identification of animals.

The aim of the present Standard is to accommodate numbering schemes for electronic identification of animals in accordance with ISO 11784 in the memory of UHF Transponders in accordance with ISO 18000-6c. To maintain the uniqueness of the individual Animal Number and the compatibility to the existing national databases worldwide is a key issue of this Standard.

Purpose

In the last years new technologies for electronic animal identification based on Ultra High Frequency (UHF) were developed, which allow longer read ranges, anti-collision and larger memory space than the LF technology required for ISO 11784.

The Numbering Scheme shall be rather independent regarding the RFID technology and the frequency used. Although the UHF technology offers a wider specification than the currently used Low Frequency technology (LF) it is necessary that the UHF Transponders use the same numbering scheme than ISO11784 to ensure the compatibility to the existing data bases worldwide and the easy exchange of animals and related data internationally.

Purpose of this proposal is to ensure the full compatibility of the new Technology to ISO11784 and the existing data base for animal identification and enable a wider disseminating and important acceptance of traceability of animals worldwide.
