Scope

This document specifies the requirements and test methods applicable to ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for the construction of pipelines:

— to convey different types of water (e.g. raw water, treated water, re-used water, desalinized water, etc.) for all types of applications (e.g. water intended for human consumption, for fire protection, for snow making, for irrigation, for hydro-electricity, etc.);

— operated with or without pressure, and;

— installed below or above ground.

This document specifies materials, dimensions and tolerances, mechanical properties and standard coatings of pipes, fittings and accessories. It also gives performance requirements for all components including joints.

This document applies to pipes, fittings and accessories cast by any type of foundry process or manufactured by fabrication of cast components, as well as corresponding joints in the size range DN 40 to DN 3000 inclusive.

It is applicable to pipes, fittings and accessories which are

— manufactured with socketed, flanged or spigot ends (joint design and gasket shapes are outside the scope of this document),

— suitable for fluid temperatures between 0 °C and 60 °C, excluding frost;

— normally delivered internally and externally coated.

This does not preclude special arrangements for the products to be used at higher temperatures.

Pipes and fittings are classified according to allowable operating pressure.

Purpose

ISO2531 defines ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories for water application, which is widely used (adoption or adoption with modifications) in several regions and countries worldwide. According to the systematic review voting result and comments collated (ISO/TC5/SC2 N883), it is necessary to revise ISO2531:2009. The comments reported several technology developments including bigger DN range, wider applications, new published referenced standards, higher performance and requirements. It laid constructive basis of revision. It is proposed to set up a work group to carry out the revision work according to ISO procedures. The revised ISO2531 shall facilitate further development of DI pipe industry as well as DI pipe market.
