Methanol is an alternative fuel for ships that helps to meet increasingly stricter shipping emissions regulations. Quality of methanol (incl renewable methanol) as marine fuel needs to be standardised as only general industry specifications exist for non-marine applications which may be too stringent for marine.
An international standard will allow for consistent characterization, quality control and handling of methanol as marine fuel all over the world. Also, the International Maritime Organisation, Marine Safety Committee, requested ISO to develop a standard for methanol (and ethanol) as marine fuel.
