The nuts specified in this International Standard (small series) are designed to mate with the hexagon bolts with flange specified in ISO 4162, and enable to:
improve the manufacturability in assembly since the driving socket of the same (common) size can be used for bolt and nut, reduce the mass of nut by 30-40% compared with the current nuts with flange specified in ISO 4161, and improve the fatigue strength of bolt mated by reducing the stress concentration on the first thread root.
This kind of nuts is highly demanded in automotive industries where high volume of flanged fasteners are used.
The mechanical properties of the nuts specified in this International Standard (small series) are confirmed to be in accordance with ISO 898-2, see the document ISO/TC 2/SC 12 N 331.
