ISO/NP 5926 Technical requirements and methods of measurement for digital cinema stereoscopic projection

Scope

This document specifies the technical requirements and corresponding measurement methods for digital cinema stereoscopic projection optical systems and stereoscopic projection equipment.

Purpose

At present, due to the lack of uniform international standards, the technical performance of the stereoscopic projection system varies greatly and sometimes the viewer's stereoscopic viewing experience is pretty poor, which has seriously affected the stereoscopic screening box office. By the end of 2018, the number of stereoscopic screens was over half of the total screens number, but the global box office for stereoscopic screens in 2018 was merely 16% of the total box office, dropping 20% from 2017.

In order to ensure the quality of stereoscopic viewing, China has always attached great importance on leading, specifying and guiding the stereoscopic projection of the industry through standards. In 2013, China released industry standard GD/J 047-2013, the world's first digital cinema stereoscopic projection standard, and then started the revision of this standard in 2017. Leading manufacturers Dolby, Real-D, DYON, LE-VISION, TIMEWAYING, FUTURE 3D etc., have participated in the whole revision process. During the revision, more than 30 types of stereo projection equipment and more than 300 stereo projection auditoriums were tested and measured. Main technical parameters including luminance center, intra-frame contrast, luminance difference between eyes, interference, light efficiency and image coincidence were analyzed and verified. At present, the revision of the GD/J 047- 2013 standard has been completed and will be released soon. The work above has laid a firm and sufficient foundation for the establishment of the stereoscopic projection international standard. In addition, with the continuous advancement of digital cinema technologies, laser projection, highefficiency 3D along with other projection technologies have improved the main system parameters such as the luminance center and intra frame contrast in digital cinema, which provides an effective technical solution to improve the audiences’ stereoscopic visual experience, and also provides technical feasibility for the development of international standards for digital cinema stereoscopic projection. In short, the development of international standards for stereoscopic film projection is not only necessary but also feasible. The formulation of this standard is conducive to the unified coordination of the performance parameters of the stereoscopic projection device, which is conducive to the viewer's stereoscopic viewing experience, and ultimately to the virtuous circle of the stereoscopic film industry.
